Where to Play Your First Run
The easiest starting point is the free The Golden Caravan Demo on Steam, which has been available since November 25, 2025. It is a separate download from the main game and is free to try. The Steam store lists the full game for Windows and macOS.
The developer, Bigfoot Gaming, also runs a playable itch.io page that presents the Demo as a sample of the wider game. A browser version with written instructions was published on Kongregate and updated in May 2026. The main game is planned to enter Early Access on October 30, 2026, so check its release date page for the current status.
What Kind of Game It Is
The Golden Caravan is a single-player card combat roguelite with a crime story. It is set in a casino ruled by feathered crime bosses, with an illustrated look inspired by Art Deco and the 1930s. Poker hands decide every fight.
Because it is a roguelite, each attempt is a run with its own rewards and choices. Some progress happens outside individual battles, through allies and shops. Treat your first runs as a way to learn the systems, not as a test you need to pass.
The Card Grid in One Minute
The browser Demo instructions describe a 5-by-5 board. On each turn you place two cards on the grid. When a row, column or diagonal holds five cards, it is scored as a poker hand.
The tutorial names pairs, straights and flushes as examples of hands. Completed hands cause attacks, and stronger hands increase the attack's strength. Our poker hands page explains the documented grid rules in more detail.
Your First Fights: What to Watch
Every card you place affects several lines at once, because a cell sits in a row, a column and sometimes a diagonal. Before placing a pair of cards, look at which lines are closest to five cards. That habit is the core of the game's planning.
An independent Steam player review of the Demo mentions an accessible hand reference in the game. Use it whenever you are unsure what a line is worth. The current in-game reference is a better authority than older notes, since rules have changed between builds.
- Read the hand reference before your first fight.
- Track which rows, columns and diagonals are nearly full.
- Watch the combat feedback after each completed line.
- Note which hands seem to hit hardest in your build.
Rewards During a Run
Runs hand out equipment as you progress. Trinkets are passive modifiers that come from slot machines, and the Demo advertises more than 30 of them. Weapons differ in their combat effects, and the Demo advertises more than ten.
Tricks are a separate, active tool for manipulating cards, such as changing a card's suit. Keep in mind that a trinket lasts for the run, which is not the same as a permanent account upgrade. See trinkets, weapons and tricks for what is confirmed about each.
Progression Between Runs
The official store description says allies offer unlocks and upgrades, and it lists permanent upgrades as part of the game. The Demo advertises three progression shops. A Demo player also describes vendor-based progression with unlock requirements.
No complete upgrade tree or best purchase order has been verified. The developer also reworked progression and shops in 2026, so old advice may be out of date. Our permanent upgrades page separates what is confirmed from what is not.
A First-Run Checklist
This checklist only uses the documented basics, so it applies whatever build you end up with. Work through it during your first two or three attempts. After that, move on to the focused pages for each system.
- Download the free Demo on Steam and finish the tutorial.
- Learn which lines on the 5-by-5 grid complete a hand.
- Keep the in-game hand reference open while you learn.
- Read every trinket and weapon tooltip before choosing it.
- Visit the progression shops between runs and note their costs.
- Record your build when a run goes well, so you can compare later.
What This Guide Does Not Cover Yet
No complete boss walkthrough, full encounter list or universal opening build has been verified. The Demo has two casino floors, which is far from the scope of the full game. We will not label this an endgame guide until the released game can be checked.
Several systems also changed during development. A September 2026 playtest added pre-run loadouts, outfits, reworked relics and seeded routes. We mark which version each fact comes from, and you can read about the newer systems on the route guide and outfits pages.

How the Game Changed in 2026
The Golden Caravan changed a lot during 2026, so the date of any advice matters. A June developer post described reworking progression and shops based on player feedback. In July the developer discussed overhauling the map and ran a PC, Mac and web playtest.
The September 9, 2026 Steam playtest added pre-run loadouts, outfits, rebuilt relics and seeded routes. That test ended on September 16. When you read an older guide or watch an older video, check which of these stages it shows.
Good Habits From the Start
A few habits make every later system easier to learn. Read tooltips fully before taking any reward, because no complete item catalog exists yet. Look at the whole board before each placement, since one card can count toward a row, a column and a diagonal.
Keep simple notes after each run, including the version you played. When something works, you will be able to repeat it. When a run fails, the notes show whether the problem was health, hands or equipment.
